How It Started
Custom Grading was founded on the vision of providing quality work. Don Johnson and son Jeff founded Custom Grading and Installation in 1991. The duo started with grading for property improvements using a Dresser TD-7 dozer.
The company was busy and quickly purchased more equipment to begin basement digging, excavating and grading for subdivisions. The father-and-son team found plenty of work within a 50-mile radius of Burlington and realized that they enjoyed working together.
In 1998 the company was featured in an article in the Bark River Magazine and by that time the team had moved into digging ponds. Business was good and customers seem to appreciate the one-on-one that Don and Jeff could provide.
The duo was comfortable meeting with customers to detail and plan a project and customers were assured that the job would be done right the first time. The business to this point had been built and grown on word-of-mouth recommendations from past customers and friends.
Jeff & Lisa Johnson
Sadly, Don Johnson passed away before 2000 and Jeff was left to build the business alone, which he did. In 2002 Jeff and his wife partnered to run the business, incorporating the company and changing the name to Custom Grading, Inc.
Shortly after, Custom Grading, Inc got into commercial excavation and grading, while continuing to provide services for residential customers. Today, Custom Grading, Inc is still focused on work in southeastern Wisconsin, and with a strong group of employees still complete projects for both commercial and residential customers.
Quality work is still the number one focus, as is family. Today Jeff’s son has joined him to learn the business and the precision of excavating and grading.
